Working Hard for the Hardworking People of Connecticut

Common Construction Worker Accidents

There is no doubt that construction is one of the most dangerous industries. The  Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that 20 percent of all workplace deaths in the United States happened in the construction industry. Construction workers spend the day on sites that have unstable structures, unstable ground, heavy equipment, power tools, and other unsafe hazards. It should be no surprise that construction workers regularly sustain injuries on the job.

While a wide variety of accidents can affect construction workers, the following are some of the most common:

  • Falls - Construction workers often have to climb ladders, be atop cranes, and work on scaffolding, bridges, roofs, and on higher floors of open structures. Anytime they work from heights, there is the chance that they may fall. Falls can lead to broken limbs, spinal cord injuries, head trauma, and other serious injuries.

  • Getting hit by or against an object - Just like construction workers often fall from heights, so can tools or building materials. When a heavy object lands on a worker, it can cause serious injuries. Workers can also get pushed into walls and into other stationary objects that can cause harm. These accidents often result in brain injuries, back injuries, crushed limbs, and other life-changing conditions.

  • Electrocutions - While buildings are in various stages of construction, so will be the wiring and electrical systems for the building. Construction workers who come into contact with ungrounded electrical wiring can be electrocuted and can suffer burns, brain damage from lack of oxygen, cardiac arrest, and other injuries, including death.

  • Getting caught between objects - Construction sites have many vehicles and equipment moving around, along with large materials being moved into place. Workers can get trapped between two large moving objects, can be crushed under a structure that collapsed, and can be caught in other spaces that cause serious injuries, or death.
