AAA Recommendations For Safer Road Signs To Help Avoid Connecticut Auto Accidents

Drivers over 65 years old are the fastest growing block of drivers on the road and this means that there are some things that may need to be done to help these drivers stay safe on the roads. AAA has put together a list of recommendations that will help keep older drivers, and all drivers on the road, safer.

With the population of older drivers growing on our roadways the recommendation is that state and local officials should begin to build street signs larger. AAA recommends that street signs become, on average, 30% larger than they are right now. It is the organization's recommendation that the size of street signs can directly impact the ability of the driver to see them and react to them.

The report also made other recommendations regarding street signs including:

  • The addition of larger lettering on signs

  • Placing signs well in advance of the “event” that is coming up on the roadway

  • Reducing the use of confusing signs

  • Limiting the amount of signs in one area so there are not multiple signs giving multiple directions

  • Placing signs higher and overhead

If municipalities were to follow these guidelines the roads would be considerably safer for all drivers, including the over 65 set that these recommendations were made for. It is the hope that these recommendations would reduce Connecticut auto accidents for drivers of all age.
