The debate rages on about how to safely return students to classrooms throughout the state of Connecticut. Many districts are sending students back to in-person learning as the state’s COVID-19 numbers remain low.
Given that it has been almost half a year since students have had to get into the routine of going from home to school it is important to review safety procedures with your kids to keep them safe. Whether your student is walking to school or riding their bike they must follow certain safety precautions that will allow them to arrive without getting into a Connecticut pedestrian accident.
To keep your kids safe on their walk/ride to and from school teach them the following safety procedures:
- Walk on a sidewalk, if one is not available walk towards traffic
- Stop and look both ways before crossing the street
- Utilize crosswalks whenever possible and always make eye contact with the driver before crossing
- Do not use your cell phone when walking, distracted walking is something to be aware of for all pedestrians
- If you are riding a bike, in addition to riding with traffic, make sure you come to a complete stop before crossing any street
Safety precautions that kids should follow on their trip to and from school will eventually become second nature, but until it does, reinforcing these simple safety techniques will help keep your child from getting hurt on their way to school.
