The state of Connecticut does not require adult motorcycle drivers to wear helmets which presents a number of risks for riders. If you were to ever get into a Connecticut motorcycle accident and get injured, not wearing a helmet could lead to one of the most significant injuries that any motorcycle rider could experience on a bike.
There is a lot of appeal to not wearing a helmet when riding your motorcycle. Feeling the wind through your hair and on your face as you race around corners of the state exploring on the open road can be one of the most magical feelings to experience. Wearing a helmet can feel restrictive and uncomfortable which may make your motorcycle ride less enjoyable. There are a variety of reasons why you may not want to wear a helmet, but let us give you one reason TO wear your helmet, traumatic brain injuries (TBI.)
You may have heard a lot about TBI in recent years with a variety of different sectors of the world being focused on these incredibly damaging injuries. Most notably, the National Football League has been working to enact new measures that help protect the players from getting concussions and/or TBIs while playing. It is instructive to think about the fact that these types of injuries can occur when players ARE wearing a helmet. You can imagine what the injury scenarios would be if the players weren’t wearing a helmet.
This brings us to wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle. Just as professional football players are running full speed ahead into grown men who can often carry the force of an auto accident, you, as the rider of a motorcycle, are barreling ahead and can get thrown off your motorcycle at a speed that these players have never seen before. If these players were not wearing a helmet it would be a life and death situation, as it is for you if you’re riding a motorcycle without a helmet.
Getting into a Connecticut motorcycle accident when you’re not wearing a helmet can lead to long-term injury that may stay with you for the rest of your life, if you’re lucky. If you’re not lucky, getting into an accident without a helmet on can mean the loss of your life due to the dramatic impact of the crash.
We know that wearing a helmet is not as fun. We know that wearing a helmet is not as cool. We know that wearing a helmet can be restrictive and make riding a motorcycle less comfortable. We know all of this, but just imagine not being able to ride a motorcycle again because you got into such a serious accident. Will it have been worth it?
Here at CT Injury Lawyers we hope you have an incredible spring and summer riding your motorcycle throughout our state and encourage you to do it safely and to protect yourself from long-term injury or worse.
