Distracted driving has become one of the biggest causes of car accidents across the country. The National Safety Council reports one in every four crashes involves someone chatting, texting, e-mailing, snapping, or sharing on a mobile device. Connecticut law prohibits the use of mobile devices while operating a motor vehicle.
Although we know of the dangers of texting while driving, we manage to do it anyway. So how do we save ourselves from being involved in a devastating car crash? Fortunately, there are several apps that make your phone a tool to fight distracted driving—as opposed to causing it.
-
Lifesaver. This app blocks your ability to use your smartphone while you are behind the wheel and notifies loved ones once you have safely arrived.
-
TruMotion. This app is good for families who might be slightly competitive. This app claims that by simply downloading it, families become safer drivers. TruMotion gives every family member a score based on safe driving habits and whether they use their smartphone while behind the wheel. It will also pinpoint the areas where drivers may have been distracted.
-
SafeDrive. This app disables texting while driving, but rewards you! When you go over 6 mph, you start to accumulate points that you can use for discounts at stores.
-
AT&T DriveMode. This app silences incoming text message notifications and phone calls so your focus is solely on operating the vehicle. DriveMode can be configured to automatically turn on when you are driving more than 15 miles per hour. If your teenage child is on the road, the app can notify you when he/she deactivates the app or changes certain settings.
