According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) fatalities among those aged 55 and older are on the rise in the United States. Of course, to file a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim the age of the injured doesn’t matter, but it is important to understand how and why this increase in deaths is happening.
The recent study which showed that in 2018 there were 1,863 fatalities at work among those aged 55 years or older, reported that 2018 was the second highest amount of fatalities in this age group since 1992 (the 1st being 2017.) The number of fatalities among this group in 2018 also represented 35% of all workplace fatalities across all age groups.
If the numbers are broken out by age group we can see that the highest cause of a workplace fatality among those aged 55 or older is of the transportation variety. In fact, 41% of all workplace fatalities were related to transportation. The category that caused the next highest amount of fatalities was slips, falls, and trips.
