AAA is one of the country’s leading traffic research organizations and they have recently released a report that describes steps that cities and states can take to make our roads safer and help to reduce the incidents of Connecticut auto accidents. While the report was specifically designed to look at steps that can be taken to keep drivers over 65 years old safe on the road, these changes could also positively impact the driving experience for all drivers on the road.
While some of the recommendations in the report are more manageable than others to implement from a logistical and financial standpoint they are all worthwhile goals to set for safer roads.
The five additional recommendations that AAA made for safer roads are:
-
Longer walk times at crosswalks for pedestrians who are slower to get across crosswalks
-
Adding “left-turn only” lanes that are signalized at intersections
-
Ensuring that all intersections that do not have stop lights are equipped with stop signs that are at least 30 inches in diameter
-
Better and brighter lighting on both highways and side streets
-
Increased use of changeable message signs. Signs that can warn of upcoming hazards and changing road conditions help save lives
As drivers age the condition of the roads and the safety features that are added to the roadways become increasingly important. If these steps are not taken as precautionary measures the number of accidents may increase due to the larger volume of older drivers on the roads.
