The opioid epidemic is reaching across all aspects of our lives to people we know and spend a significant amount of time with. This may include our co-workers who may be battling addiction right now. Addiction is a serious matter for the user, but it can also impact your safety at the workplace and should not be ignored.
If you notice any of the following signs from any of your co-workers you should aid them in seeking help.
- Changes in mood or behavior
- Taking medication “just in case”
- Mood swings
- Trying to “borrow” medication from other co-workers
- Actions that are out of character and putting those around himself/herself at risk
According to the Mayo Clinic the signs can be subtle at first and get progressively more pronounced over time. It may be difficult to determine if your coworker is abusing opioids, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be aware of the signs and say something if you suspect their use. Especially if he/she is taking actions that could put you in harms way, someone should know about it.
Opioid addiction is a personal battle and may not be something that your coworker wants to talk about, but it may become a matter of workplace safety and then it is a concern for your whole team.
If you have been injured at your job and suspect it was due to the risky behaviors of someone who was abusing opioids contact our office. Our board certified workers’ compensation team will walk you through the process of filing your claim.
