Connecticut pedestrian accidents were at an all-time high in Connecticut in 2020 and this year, with people still in a state of lockdown there will likely continue to be more pedestrian traffic on Connecticut streets.
It can take some getting used to having so many pedestrians out and about, especially during the winter months, when it is unusual to have folks out walking in the cold weather. As always drivers are encouraged to slow down and stay alert for pedestrians on the street, but there are also some things that pedestrians can do to keep themselves safe.
If you are out and about during the winter months you can take these five steps to help you avoid an accident and arrive to your destination safely;
-
Always cross where it is marked to be ok, for example, a crosswalk or a marked intersection.
-
Use sidewalks where available.
-
Be extra careful when stepping out from behind a snowbank, especially one that is taller than you are.
-
Don’t text or talk on your phone while walking.
-
Wear lightly colored or reflective clothing so you can remain visible even at dusk or in the evening hours.
While following these five things will not guarantee your safety from a Connecticut pedestrian accident, they will certainly set you up for being much safer than if you did not take these steps. Keep in mind that drivers are not used to seeing pedestrians out and about in the cold winter months so your extra precaution may be the difference between staying safe and not.
