All too often drivers who run red lights or stop short at red lights cause accidents and in many cases these accidents can lead to a fatality. In fact, AAA reported that in 2017 there were nearly 1,000 fatalities due to drivers who ran a red light.
When a driver runs a red light accidents can be particularly bad and often lead to death. The impact of running a red light can not be understated.
There is also another traffic concern at red lights though and that is being rear ended when coming to a stop at a red light. While these types of accidents don’t often lead to fatalities, they can lead to serious injury which may require medical attention. If you’re the first in line and are approaching a red light there are some things you can do to stay safe.
- Tap your brakes: Even if the driver may not see that the light has turned red, giving them a second signal is a good way to alert them that you are slowing down. Tapping your brakes may be the extra nudge they need to pay attention and start slowing down as well.
- Prepare to stop: Taking your foot off the gas pedal and moving it over the brake will give you the ability to not stop short and give the driver behind you time to slow down as well.
- Monitor the green light: As you’re approaching, if the light has been green for a while you’ll want to start slowing down. Many drivers think the best thing to do when a light has been green is to speed up to catch the light, but this may lead to unintended consequences.
