Between 2017-2018 pedestrian deaths in the state of Connecticut have skyrocketed to an all time high and with the turning of the calendar to 2020, that trend does not appear to be changing any time soon.
From 2017 to 2018 the number of pedestrians who died on Connecticut’s roads was up an incredible 20% year over year. In 2020, there have already been 14 pedestrian deaths throughout the state which puts Connecticut on track for 84 pedestrian deaths this year.
This rise in pedestrian deaths has led lawmakers to propose new legislation to protect pedestrians on Connecticut roads. Proposed legislation last year failed after it was passed out of the House only to die in the Senate and a new pedestrian safety bill is being brought up at the state level again this year.
This year’s version of the bill includes the ability for cities and towns to determine the speed limits on their own roads based on community feedback. Pedestrians are also included in the new bill which would allow them to signal their intent to cross at a crosswalk by waving or putting a foot out into the road which the law currently prohibits.
Avoiding pedestrian deaths is not as easy as it may sound, but with the meteoric rise in deaths it is an imperative that something gets done and fast.
