Right-hook accidents are one of the most common types of bicycle crashes involving motor vehicles. They are caused by the driver of a car, and they usually occur in intersections. Right-hook accidents occur when a motorist makes a right-hand turn and hits or cuts off a bicyclist, causing him or her to collide with the vehicle. Generally, these accidents happen when a vehicle and a bicycle are traveling in the same direction, with the vehicle on the right shoulder or in the bike lane. The vehicle overtakes the bicycle and then immediately turns right. Right-hook accidents can also happen when a vehicle and a bicycle are both waiting at a red light. The light turns green and the vehicle turns right without waiting for the bicycle to proceed through the intersection.
While it is impossible to control the actions of every driver on the road, bicyclists can take certain precautions to avoid being involved in a right-hook accident. The bicycle advocacy group Virtuous Bicycle recommends the following:
-
Try and read the intentions of motorists to determine if they’re about to make a right turn. Beware if they pass you rapidly, move in front of you and then slow down, or move from the middle lane to the right lane, they may not notice you.
-
When approaching a right-turn intersection, always scan traffic over your left shoulder, and make eye contact with approaching motorists, if possible.
-
Communicate your intentions clearly to motorists through assertive riding and the use of hand signals.
-
If a car pulls into the lane behind you and signals to turn, move to the left of the lane and use a hand gesture to encourage the driver to pass you on the right and complete the turn while you wait.
-
Take an evasive maneuver to avoid being in the “hook zone.” One of the easiest ways to avoid this is to turn right along with the vehicle. Practice your evasive maneuvering in an empty parking lot to perfect your skills.
