Each year the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety surveys people to determine the Traffic Safety Culture Index. This year was no different and the report discovered some interesting trends when it came to driver’s attitudes about texting or talking while driving vs. their behaviors in these two areas.
So how did respondents feel about the perceived dangers of texting/talking while driving? The vast majority of respondents were aware of the dangers:
- Reading texts (97% aware)
- Typing texts (96% aware)
The challenge for researchers and those working to keep the roads safe is that the perceived danger of these types of activities does not necessarily deter respondents from actively engaging in this type of distracted driving behavior.
The index reported out that more than half of those who responded admitted to having spoken on a telephone while driving. Nearly 45% of all respondents admitted to reading a text message while driving. Still another 32% admitted writing/typing a text WHILE driving.
This type of behavior has been known to be as dangerous and in some cases more dangerous than drinking and driving, leading to a Connecticut auto accident. Of course, this type of behavior is consistent with other human behaviors that are known to be not safe or healthy .
