If you work in a job that requires stress and strain on your body it is not unrealistic to think that you may find yourself with a sudden event like a heart attack while at work. We certainly do not wish this on anyone, but if it were to happen you should know your rights and understand that it could be considered a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim.
A heart attack may not be the first thing you think of when you consider a possible injury at work. In fact, the most common workplace injuries include things like a sudden slip and fall, a fall from a ladder, or even longer, more drawn out injuries like repetitive strain injuries caused by your work environment. However, a heart attack can absolutely be caused by your work environment and if it happens at work you may be able to claim it as a workplace injury.
As with all workplace injuries your first step in starting the claims process is to report the injury to a supervisor. With a heart attack that may not be possible as it may result in an emergency situation. In this case, your supervisor will be notified by the emergency medical staff that tends to your condition. Once you are resting comfortably you should have a conversation with your supervisor about the situation that resulted in your heart attack.
Many heart attacks lead to long term health implications that may require you to be out of work for extended periods of time and in some cases you may not be able to go back to your job in the same capacity that you were able to before. If your employer can provide you with a job that you are able to perform at the same pay rate you may be able to go back to work after your Connecticut workers’ compensation has run out. If you are permanently injured and unable to perform the duties of your job you may be eligible for Permanent Total Disability (PTD.)
A heart attack is generally a very sudden and traumatic injury for someone to experience. It is important that you are prepared with the knowledge of your rights as an employee if an injury like this were to occur while at work. If you know your rights and are prepared you will better be able to manage the after effects of such an injury.
