For many years the construction field has been known to be one of the most dangerous businesses to be in. In fact, many of the reported Connecticut workers’ compensation claims come from the construction field.
It was no surprise then, when these statistics revealed just how dangerous the industry can be for its workers. The first thing to look at is the types of injuries that occur on a job site;
- 33% involve some sort of fall
- 11% are from someone being struck by an object
- 8% have something to do with being electrocuted
- 5% are a result of someone getting caught in or between something
Many of these types of injuries are not a result of someone not doing their job properly, they are often a result of the job just being dangerous to begin with. In fact, the construction field alone accounts for 1 out of every 5 deaths from workplace injury. This is a staggering number considering how many areas of work there truly are where fatalities are possible.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics nearly half of all work related fatalities occurred on a construction job site. Nearly half of these fatalities were the result of workers who died on the job working for small companies of 10 or fewer employees.
This final statistic is unnerving to anyone who works in the construction field. If you work a 45 year career in construction you have a 1 in 200 chance of dying while on the job. It’s a stunning number that should give all in the industry pause.
