Teen drivers are far more likely than adult drivers to get into a Connecticut auto accident. While a recent study found that teen deaths from accidents are down significantly in Connecticut in the last 5 years, these drivers still have a decidedly higher risk of getting into an accident then adult drivers.
Fatalities from car crashes involving teen drivers are down significantly nationally over the last forty years. The fact remains that drivers between the ages of 16 and 19 years old are nearly 3 times more likely to get into a fatal car accident than those who are over the age of 20.
Why are these numbers so much higher for teen drivers? The answer may lie in these three reasons:
- Inexperience: This is the most obvious answer. The longer you’ve been doing something the better you get at it. Teen drivers are those that have very recently gotten their license. This makes them more susceptible to mistakes which in turn puts them in riskier situations.
- Risk Averse: Most teens are far less concerned about taking a risk than older drivers. Teens are more likely to drive at a higher rate of speed, with more people in the car and with loud music playing. All of these things can be factors in auto accidents.
- Distracted driving: Teens are far more likely to engage in distracted driving behaviors such as cell phone use. These types of behaviors can cause serious risks and have potentially fatal results.
