Each year the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) releases a report detailing the number of work related injuries that occured in each state. The report for 2019 recently came out for Connecticut and there are some interesting details in the report.
Generally speaking the construction industry sees the highest rate of workplace injuries among all major industries, this was not the case in 2019 in Connecticut. In fact, construction was not in the top 5 of reported injuries that resulted in time away from work. The industries that made the dubious list include;
- Private Industry
- The Service Industry
- Educational and Health Services
- Trade, Transportation, and Utilities
- Health Care and Social Assistance
While many of these categories are broad it is important to note that health care placed in twice in the top 5 of workplace related injuries.
The data for this report is collected by two different BLS programs, the BLS Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) and the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries. The SOII relies on “estimates for nonfatal cases of work-related injuries and illnesses from participating States and Territories that are recorded by employers under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordkeeping guidelines.”
If you are deciding on an industry to look for a job in, these numbers may be helpful to you in deciding where you want to go next in your career. Avoiding industries with a high level of Connecticut workers’ compensation may be in your best interest.
