Each year when winter weather hits local and state authorities will often issue travel advisories. Some are more severe than others. If a storm is not that bad, it may come across as a suggestion from officials, but if a storm is going to be dire the warning will often be more forceful.
When the Mayor or the Governor issues travel advisories, you would be smart to heed them, even if you feel like where you’re going is not at that great a risk. While the local weather forecasters have good technology to give you a general idea of the snow totals and road conditions, local and state officials have a wide array of tools at their disposal to help them make determinations as to whether or not travel is safe. If, after consulting all of these tools, they determine that it is not safe to travel, you’re likely better off staying home and staying safe.
The other reason heeding travel advisories is a good idea is that when these announcements are being made it is in the interest of the public good. In other words, officials are asking you to stay off the roads to allow emergency vehicles to get where they are going without fear of getting into an accident. It is also allows those clearing the roads to get out and move quickly to remove the snow and ice from the roadways and get everyone back to driving normally.
It can be frustrating when you have somewhere to go and travel advisories are announced which make it more difficult to get to your destination. Heeding these warnings and advisories is the best way to keep you and your loved ones safe during the winter months.
