While you’re out enjoying the beautiful summer weather we’ve been having there are some hazards you will want to avoid. As a pedestrian you are susceptible to accidents if you and motorists are not careful. A Connecticut pedestrian accident can be incredibly serious and cause permanent injury or death.
Walking the streets of Enfield or Hartford doesn’t have to be dangerous as long as you take these easy precautions while you’re out and about:
-
Wear bright colors. An orange reflective vest would be the safest, but if you do not have one of those any colors that stand out will do the trick.
-
Look both ways before crossing the street. You’ve probably been hearing your parents tell you that since you were two years old, but it bears repeating. Accidents can be prevented by simply keeping your eyes open.
-
Obey street signs and lights. It can be tempting when on-coming traffic has slowed to cross before your walk sign turns to go but waiting an extra second for it to change may be the difference between life and death.
-
Use the sidewalk. One of the easiest ways to get injured as a pedestrian is by not utilizing sidewalks when they are provided. If you’re walking IN the street your risk grows significantly.
-
Make eye contact. When you’re getting ready to cross a street, make sure you get a glimpse of the eyes of the driver coming at you. This will give you a sense that they see you and it is safe to cross.
-
Avoid using your smartphone when walking. Texting and walking can be just as dangerous as texting while driving.
Being a pedestrian in any size town or city can be a harrowing experience. Drivers are often not as careful as they should be and if you’re not paying attention and following the rules of the road it could be a recipe for disaster.
