Five Ways To Stay Safe On Slippery Roads This Winter

Just as the weather has really begun to get cold and our roads have begun to ice over and even get piled high with snow, it is time to make sure you know how to avoid slippery roads this winter.  If you are not sure how to stay safe in these types of conditions it may lead to a Connecticut auto accident.

While you cannot avoid slippery roads all together this time of year, you may be able to put yourself in a position to limit your exposure and therefore your chances of getting into an accident due to the conditions.  If you can take a few small precautions you will keep yourself and your passengers out of trouble during the winter months.

1. Keep your tires properly inflated.  Tires lose air in the winter and tire pressure should be monitored closely.  Tires that are underinflated are much more likely to slide on slippery surfaces.  When your tires are properly inflated you are safer.

2. Avoid driving at night.  This time of year when the sun goes down the temperatures does too and therefore there is a greater risk of slippery conditions at night.  If you can get to your destination before sunset you will be in a much safer place.

3. Let the storm pass.  If a storm is blowing in and you can wait it out at home or wherever you find yourself at the time that it blows through, you may be better off then heading out on the roads at the height of the storm.  When visibility is low during a storm, slippery roads take on a whole new danger.

4. Make sure your windshield is completely clear before heading out.  Again, visibility here is key to being able to spot and avoid slippery spots on the roads.  If you are having a hard time seeing out of your windshield, you will be less likely to keep yourself and your passengers safe.

5. Learn how to properly navigate a skid.  In the inevitable instance that when driving during the winter months you end up slipping on a section of road that is icy or snowy, knowing how to get yourself through the slide is imperative so you can get to the other side of it and keep driving.
