Alcohol Was Involved In Nearly 1/2 Of All Auto Accident Deaths

For years groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have been trying to instill into the minds of Americans that the dangers of driving while under the influence of alcohol are far greater than any other risky behavior behind the wheel.  Now we have the data to prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) nearly 1/2 of all auto accident deaths occurred because one of the parties involved was under the influence of alcohol.  This resulted in just over 2,800 fatalities in 2017.  The numbers are almost as bad when you look at pedestrian accidents in which nearly 1/3 of all fatalities the pedestrian involved was intoxicated.

In Connecticut auto accidents the number is on par with the national number as about 43% of all auto accident fatalities in the state were a result of at least one of the parties involved being intoxicated.  In 2017 there were 273 auto accident deaths in Connecticut and 120 of those accidents involved alcohol.
