Berlin Turnpike Project Aims To Reduce Connecticut Auto Accidents Involving Pedestrians

Sadly, there is an epidemic in the state of Connecticut which is seeing far too many pedestrians die at the hands of motor vehicles.  These Connecticut auto accidents have become such a problem that the state has taken action in the form of a new pedestrian safety law that went into effect last year.  The state is also taking some actions that will benefit pedestrians from an infrastructure standpoint.

The state Department of Transportation (DOT) has broken ground on a $10 million project along the Berlin Turnpike which intends to make major strides in pedestrian safety along that increasingly busy stretch of road.  The investments will include adding in upgraded traffic signals at 14 of the busiest intersections along the road as well as the adding in crosswalks and push buttons to improve pedestrian safety.  The project is expected to be completed in a very short amount of time.

Not only was there an impetus to get this construction done quickly due to the statewide concerns over pedestrian safety, there were very real concerns about the Berlin Turnpike specifically, which had seen six deaths over the last month.  State officials are citing drivers who are driving faster than ever along the road as well as those drivers who are not paying close attention to the road and driving while distracted.

The interventions that are being added as safety measures along the Berlin Turnpike are considered to be long overdue and a positive step in the right direction to avoid more deaths.  When the infrastructure is complete there will be plenty of spots along the turnpike where pedestrians can cross safely and without the fear of not being seen in time for a driver to stop.

If you are a driver who regularly travels the Berlin Turnpike you will notice the new additions in the coming weeks and months.  When these changes are combined with safer driving habits from drivers we can all work to save lives.  As a driver on any road you should take the following steps to insure that you are keeping the safety of all pedestrians and other drivers in mind;

  1. Drive the speed limit.  Excessive speed is one of the deadliest things you can do when you’re behind the wheel.  If you are speeding, injuries from an accident can become deadly.

  2. Pay attention.  Distracted driving is one of the easiest ways to put yourself in a position where you may harm someone who is a pedestrian along a busy road.  You should always be paying attention to the road in front of you.

  3. Follow the rules of the road and if you are not familiar with the new installations, become familiar with them so you can make sure you are following all of the new safety measures.

While it is difficult that it took so many pedestrian deaths for the State to stand up and do something about this problem, it is good that something is now being done.  Getting into a Connecticut auto accident, whether with another driver or a pedestrian can be dangerous and cause you injury and stress.  By following the above steps and driving responsibly you can avoid this situation all together and keep everyone on the road safer.
