The End Of Daylight Savings Time Presents Greater Risks For A Connecticut Bicycle Accident

With cooler temperatures comes shorter days and longer nights. The autumn air may feel good, but the darker skies present some risks to those of us who enjoy outdoor recreation. Connecticut bicycle accidents tend to increase in the months of September, October, and November as temperatures are still warm enough to ride, but the shorter days leave less time.

If you are a cyclists you know that riding your bike this time of year can be dangerous and if you do not take the necessary precautions you could find yourself injured or worse. Here are some precautions you should consider taking if you’ll be riding your bike as daylight savings time ends.

  • Wear bright clothing. If you have a reflective vest and cycling pants, this is your best bet to be seen by passing cars.
  • Use a headlight or headlamp. If your bike does not have a headlight, you can get a headlamp to wear so you can keep yourself safe.
  • Stop at intersections. It can be tempting to just slow at intersections, but when cars can’t see you as well slowing may still lead to an accident.
  • When in doubt, let them pass. A car can be seen from a greater distance away when they have their headlights on. This can make it seem like you have more time then you do to cross in front of them.

Following these precautions as the nights get longer and there is less daylight to ride during will keep you safe as the seasons change.
