Five Mechanical Checks To Get Your Bike Ready For Spring Riding

Many people put their bicycles away for the winter months due to the cold weather and potential for snow and ice on the roads and bike paths.  After a few months of sitting in a garage or closet, bikes can have all sorts of things go wrong with them.  Before taking the bike out for the spring it is important to perform some basic mechanical checks to insure that the bike will perform as expected when out riding it.

It may still be a little cold, but it certainly is a good time to get started thinking about your bike and getting it prepared so that when you do take it out for the first time when the weather warms up a bit you will not have any unexpected failures that will lead to a Connecticut bicycle accident.  We should also note that if you are not a bike expert you may want to have this type of mechanical tune up performed by a professional at your local bike shop.

  1. Tires.  Just as you would on your car you will want to check the tire pressure on your bike.  As the seasons change the air in your tires can increase or decrease and poorly pressurized tires can lead to dangerous conditions on the road.

  2. Your chain.  Changing gears is one of the most beneficial things you can do to make your bike ride enjoyable, but if your chain is not oiled properly and seated on the crank properly it can lead to serious issues that may result in an accident.

  3. Your seat.  This may be one that you miss, but it is important nonetheless.  When you hop on to your bike the seat should be positioned appropriately for your height.  If it is not, you could be sitting awkwardly on your bike and be uncomfortable or worse wobbly on your bike.

  4. Brakes.  Again, just as in a car, brakes have a tendency to wear down over time and if they do they can cause serious dangers for you if you’re out riding.  You should check to make sure your brakes are functioning properly before you head out on your first ride of the new season.

  5. Reflectors.  Serious riders know that reflectors are important so you can always be seen when you’re out riding your bike.  If your reflectors are pointed down or are loose, they will not serve their purpose and that could make it difficult for you to be seen.

Spring bike riding is one of the most refreshing ways to shake off the winter blues.  With warmer weather and bright flowers popping up all over the place it can be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable first activities you do after hibernating all winter.  If you don’t take necessary safety precautions though it can turn from one heck of a ride to a dangerous Connecticut bicycle accident and leave you injured.
