Five Safety Checks You Should Perform To Prevent A Connecticut Auto Accident

It can be easy to get stuck in the hustle and bustle of the day to day and forget about your car and the maintenance you need to do on it to keep yourself and your passengers safe while driving.  There are however some very important steps you should take to protect yourself against a Connecticut auto accident.

While these safety checks don’t need to be performed by you, if you are bringing your car to a mechanic or your car dealer to perform them for you, you will want to explicitly ask that these specific checks be done.  Your mechanic will likely not do these checks without being asked, so it is in your best interest to be proactive to get the following list of checks done regularly.

  1. Headlights.  One of the most important safety features in your car are your headlights and if they are not working properly you may be in danger.  While it will be obvious to you as the driver that they are all not working, there may be a time where it is difficult to determine if just one of them is out.  It is good to have these looked at annually.

  2. Blinkers.  Just because you hear the sound of your blinkers working does not mean that they are functioning properly.  You will want someone to look at your blinkers to ensure that they are working and if they are not they will need to be replaced or fixed to avoid a crash.

  3. Brake lights:  Similarly to  blinkers it can be challenging to know whether you have a brake light out or not.  You might rely on a stranger telling you when you are stopped at a red light that your brake lights are out or you can be proactive and have these checked bi-annually.

  4. Brake pads.  This is not a check you can likely perform yourself so you will need to have these checked on your next appointment with your mechanic.  When your car is in for an oil change or something small, you can ask your mechanic to check how your brake pads are holding up.

  5. Camera equipment.  Many cars these days come equipped with side cameras and reverse cameras to help you and your car see more clearly around you when you are driving.  These cameras can break and they should be repaired.  While maintenance is not necessary on these cameras, you will still want to do a safety check to make sure they are functioning as expected.
