Five Ways Cyclists Can Avoid Bicycle Accidents This Summer

With warmer weather comes more opportunities for you to be out riding through cities and towns.  Connecticut bicycle accidents happen with more frequency in the summer months and therefore it is more important than ever to be aware of the things you can do to prevent yourself from being in an accident.

  1. Don’t ride on the road.  The safest place for a cyclist to ride is on a bike trail that is specifically designed to be safe for cycling.  Riding your bike on a pathway that is devoid of cars is the best way to avoid a bicycle accident.

  1. Stay in your lane.  Many cities and towns now have bike lanes that are specifically designed to keep cyclists safe.  If you’re sharing the road with motorists, make sure to stay in these lanes.

  2. Where reflective gear.  Even when you’re riding in the daylight hours reflective gear can help you be spotted by motorists who otherwise may not see you.  The more you can be seen, the better your chances are to avoid a bicycle accident.

  1. Use hand signals.  Cars and trucks have blinkers to show which way they are turning and what their next move is, but cyclists do not have that luxury.  You must rely on hand signals to give fair notice to a motorist about your next move. Using the proper hand signals will keep you safe on the road.

  1. Follow the rules of the road.  It might be tempting to take a shortcut around the rules of the road when riding your bike, but it is critical to your safety that you do not.  Obey street signs and lights to avoid being struck by a motorist.
