Working Hard for the Hardworking People of Connecticut

Four Things You Can Do To Limit Your Exposure To Cement Dust On The Job

There are many people who face severe workplace injuries which may even lead to a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim.  The construction industry is one of the industries that is most impacted by injury and some are of extreme severity.  Falls from high above worksites and injuries due to operating heavy machinery are among the types of workplace injuries that garner headlines, but there are some less obvious injuries that can leave lasting impacts on workers.

One of these lasting injuries is caused by exposure to cement dust on the job.  A construction site is often filled with dust and dirt in the air that can lead to lingering respiratory injuries.  These injuries can leave workers incapacitated and out of work for days if not weeks.  There are some things you can do if you are on a job site and cement dust becomes an issue.

  • If you get cement dust in your eyes, you should rinse them out immediately and if it is a severe enough case you should consult a physician
  • Limit damage to your skin by ensuring that all cement dust has been washed away using both soap and water.
  • Do not eat on the job site.  Eating will increase your exposure and could contaminate your lungs further.
  • Wear a mask.  Minimizing inhalation of this type of dust is imperative and can be accomplished by wearing a P - N - R - 95 mask.

If you are working on a job site and consider the air to be difficult to breath, make sure you are taking the above precautions.  These precautions will allow you to continue working without damage to your skin, eyes, or respiratory system.
