How To Avoid A Connecticut Workers’ Compensation Claim At Your New Job

The new year is upon us and for many that means a new job.  It’s an exciting time with endless possibilities and a renewed energy for the work that you do, but it can also be a scary time.  There are possibilities that while at a new job you could get injured while performing your duties and that could lead to a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim.

No matter the job, new roles and responsibilities can lead to some level of uncertainty and uneasiness about whether or not you are doing the job well.  There is also a chance that you will make mistakes as you go and if those mistakes are related to your safety and security an injury might mount and you could be in some serious trouble both personally and professionally.

The good news is that there are some things you can do, even as a new employee, that will keep you safe from injuring yourself and making mistakes that could cost you your job.  Taking these steps at a new job are the best ways that you can protect yourself and your co-workers and learn to grow in your new role.

  1. Learn the job inside and out.  While this can take quite some time depending on how complex your role is, you will need to take the time to make sure you know everything about your work.  If you have questions, make sure you ask them.  If there are materials that you need to read, read them.  Do everything in your power to know the job to the best of your ability before you get too far into your role and develop bad habits that could put you in danger.

  2. Understand all of the safety and security protocols.  Depending on the size of your company you may be faced with training for the safety measures that are required to do your job successfully.  If there is no training and it is on-the-job training you will want to take your time slowly to develop into the role that you are working on that is new to you.  Without taking your time and completely understanding the safety measures you are putting yourself and your co-workers at risk of getting injured or worse.

  3. Do not cut corners on safety equipment.  If the safety equipment that is necessary to perform your job is not provided to you, make sure you go out and purchase it so you are safe.  If you need a hard hat or a harness or a specific type of footwear or eye wear, make sure you are wearing the right clothing and equipment or you could find yourself injured.  Your company SHOULD provide you with all of the appropriate equipment to do your job safely and if you haven’t been provided it, you may wish to speak with your supervisor to make sure you haven’t missed something when being assigned equipment to do your job.

There is something so exciting about starting a new job.  There is the anticipation of the salary, the excitement of meeting new people and the possibilities of career growth that all come with a new job.  It is also important that you take your safety and security into your own hands while performing the duties of your new job so you don’t get injured and aren’t forced to file a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim when you’re just starting out in your new role.

One thing you should not be concerned about is retaliation if you do have to file a claim because it is against the law for your employer to hold it against you if you file a claim.  If you are in a situation where you need help filing a claim you may wish to speak with a board certified attorney who has worked on many cases and likely has seen situations similar to yours.  Contact our office and one of our experienced attorneys will review your claim.
