Incredible Traffic For Up To 24 Hours - How To Prepare For A Backup Like This

Motorists along the I95 corridor were met with a very rude way to start the new year early this month when they faced, in some cases, 24 hours of traffic.  A winter storm was one of the contributing factors to the delays and it could happen anywhere, including here in Connecticut.

Even if you are able to avoid a Connecticut auto accident on a road that is backed up for extended periods of time due to snow and ice, you may find yourself in need of some very basic tools to keep yourself warm and safe while you are backed up.  This handy list of items you should have in your car always will make it so that if you do run into this difficult situation you are prepared.

  1. Cell phone charger.  Even the best cell phones these days cannot hold a charge for 24 hours, especially if they are in use for traffic information, music/podcasts, and communicating with loved ones.  A car charger is critical to your ability to withstand a 24 hour traffic jam.

  2. First-aid kit.  Of course you would hope that you wouldn’t get injured during a traffic jam, but if you find yourself having to get out of your car to gain traction on an icy road, you may cut your hand or have another medical emergency that you may need to take care of on your own.  If you have a first-aid kit you can manage for a 24 hour period.

  3. Water and snacks.  You should always travel, especially when you’re traveling long distances with a supply of water and snacks in your vehicle.  Not only will you get hungry after a long wait, but you may also need the water to keep yourself hydrated.  The most dangerous thing that could happen to you during a situation like this is to get dehydrated.

  4. Flashlight and extra batteries.  If night falls and you are stuck without the ability to use headlights you may need a flashlight.  An extra set of batteries will also be helpful in case you need the flashlight for an extended period of time.

While we hope that you are never involved in a situation as dire as the one that drivers found on I95 in Virginia, we know that it is a possibility and you are better to be safe than sorry.  Spending a few minutes today getting prepared for a long-shot possibility will leave you grateful if you do find yourself in a bad situation.

When you are driving long distances there are more chances for getting injured in an accident and if you do find yourself in that situation you can always call our office to speak with an experienced attorney who can help you work with the insurance companies to look out for your long-term interests.
