These days there is a National Month for every cause under the sun, but we think that National Safety Month is an important one to highlight because it gives us an opportunity to look at our home and identify possible hazards that may exist which may cause a Connecticut slip and fall accident when you start to have guests over again for the first time in a long time.
At some point this month we encourage you to take a few minutes and walk around your home, both inside and outside, to check for areas where small improvements could make a big safety difference. Not only will you be able to get some maintenance done on your home, but you’ll also be protecting your family and those who visit from any dangerous accidents that might occur.
Here are some of the things you may want to look for as you do a sweep of your house to investigate any hazards;

Walkways, driveways, and outside stairs. If there are any cracks, raised or lowered sections, or loose stairs you will want to get those inspected and repaired immediately.

Railings. On both interior and exterior stairs railings can be a real issue. If someone is expecting a railing for help balancing and it is either loose and wobbly or completely broken it could present a serious falling hazard and cause a severe injury.

Cords. Cords can be a hazard and you may not even know that they are there. If you’ve been living with them you probably just know where they are and how to avoid them, but a visitor may not know that. If there is an extension cord run along your floor somewhere it may present a tripping hazard.

Outdoor hazards which may include things like children’s toys strewn about the yard, planters, hoses, etc. These hazards that are either out of place or in the right place, but just easily missed, can cause injury to someone coming over to your home and visiting. Before they do, ensure that these items are properly stowed or marked.
If you’re planning on having visitors this summer to your home and you haven’t spent any time walking around your home looking for possible fall hazards, now is a great time to do it. Do it in honor of National Safety Month, but also to ensure that your home is safe for all who visit and that you’re limiting the risks of visitors getting into a Connecticut slip and fall accident.
