Working Hard for the Hardworking People of Connecticut

Marijuana Legalization Could Result In More Workplace Injuries

At the beginning of July, the use and possession of recreational marijuana became legal in the state of Connecticut.  The drug is now legal, but regulated.  This point is a key point in that there are regulations around its use and while it is legal it can still cause harm in certain settings.

One of those settings is the workplace.  The use of drugs in the workplace is one significant thing that can lead to more workplace injuries and a larger number of Connecticut workers’ compensation claims.  Just like alcohol consumption, the consumption of marijuana can lead to some uncertain situations in the workplace and can cause serious harm for you or your co-workers.

The effects of marijuana on judgement and clarity are well-documented.  Some of these effects can be detrimental to your success at work.  These effects include, but are not limited to:

  1. Impaired judgement

  2. Reduced reaction times

  3. Loss of short-term memory

  4. Reduced capacity for concentration

  5. Impairment of driving ability

As you might imagine, all of these effects can impair your ability to do your job properly and effectively.  No matter what industry you are in, the use of drugs or alcohol, legal or otherwise, can have an adverse effect on your mind and therefore your skill level in conducting your work.

Impaired judgement and reduced reaction time can lead to mistakes being made which will result in a workplace injury.  The inability to concentrate can have devastating impacts on your ability to follow simple safety procedures that could get you or a co-worker injured.  If you are a driver for your job, being high can significantly impair your ability to drive.  All of these effects that marijuana may have on you at home or in a recreational setting are a recipe for an injury and in turn a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim.
