Perform These Safety Checks On Your Car To Prepare For Winter

As the temperatures begin to cool in the state of Connecticut it will be in short order that the roads start to ice up and the winter weather will be upon us.  Before you know it, your car, which functioned so well in the spring and summer will be struggling to get you home while avoiding a Connecticut auto accident.

It doesn’t have to be this way.  Right now is a great time to take a few minutes to do a number of different safety checks on your vehicle that may wind up saving your life this winter.  Each of these items will take no more than 30-minutes so you could use our list and knock them off one day at a time because we know you’re busy.  Take the first item and work your way down the list and before the first frost your car will be ready to roll into winter safely.

  1. Windshield Wipers:  Maybe this is the most obvious safety check you can perform, but the same windshield wipers that whisked away summer rain may not do the trick when it comes to snow, sleet, and ice.  Check to make sure they are secure and the blades are working properly.

  2. Tire pressure:  In the summer months the heat of the road expands the air in your tires giving them an overinflated pressure.  The opposite happens in the winter months.  One of the greatest determining factors of getting into an accident is if your tires are properly inflated.  You should be performing this check bi-weekly in the winter as the temperatures change.

  3. Headlights and taillights: There are a couple of things you will want to do here.  First, make sure that the lens of the headlights and taillights are clean and clear of any film, this will ensure that they are shining as brightly as possible.  Second, you will want to check to make sure each of the headlights, taillights, and brake lights are functioning as expected.

  4. Check your fluids:  While low fluids may not be a deciding factor in whether or not you get yourself into a Connecticut auto accident this winter, they could potentially leave you stranded on the side of the road which could lead to fatal consequences.  Make sure all your fluids are changed and filled and you’ll be driving stress free this winter.

There you go, just four checklist items to make sure your car is safe this winter.  You can take these one at a time over the next couple of weeks and you’ll be driving stress and worry free all winter long.
