Preparing Your Vehicle For The WInter May Help You Avoid A Connecticut Car Accident

Winter weather is here and as much as we may not like to think about being bundled up in our jackets and sweaters, it is unavoidable.  Winter weather means not just colder temperatures, but more treacherous road conditions which can easily lead to a Connecticut auto accident which just might leave you distraught over the winter season from the very beginning.

There is some good news, you still have time.  You have time to enjoy the last few weeks of fall weather and you also have time to prepare.  You have time to prepare your wardrobe, your home and most importantly your vehicle for the change in seasons.  Making adjustments to your vehicle can help save your life when you get into the unpredictable driving conditions that winter weather sometimes causes.

Depending on your level of expertise when it comes to working on your car you may be able to perform many of these changes to your vehicle yourself and without great expense.  While some of the tune-ups may require you to bring the vehicle to someone with more expertise than yourself, they shouldn’t cost you a large sum of money and in the end they may save you considerably more headaches if you are able to avoid any damage to your vehicle or injury to yourself.

Some of the tune-ups you should consider doing before the weather turns cold and unpredictable include;

  1. Check your tire pressure.  You may decide that you actually want to change your all season tires to winter specific tires, but whether you do that or not, you should make sure your tires are inflated properly.  Under inflated tires can cause serious dangers, especially when you are driving on cold roads that may have some black ice as a hazard while you’re driving along.

  2. Replace your windshield wiper blades.  In some cases you will want to replace the entire windshield wiper, but in most cases replacing just the blade should do the trick.  This should be a relatively easy fix, but if you aren’t sure about how to do it you may need to have someone with more experience then you do it.  The last thing you will want is for your blade to be improperly installed and come flying off while driving down the road in a snowstorm.

  3. Clean your headlights and taillights.  Over the course of a year your headlights and taillights may become covered in a film that can make them less effective.  With less daylight and more difficult conditions your headlights and taillights are a critical piece of your safety infrastructure in your car.  If they are dulled or dim you may not be able to see properly which can cause you to get into an accident.  While doing this, you may also need to replace a bulb or two that has blown out over time.

These three simple checks you can perform on your vehicle can help you to prevent a Connecticut car accident in the winter months.  The winter in Connecticut can be long and treacherous and if you take the time now to work on your vehicle you will be prepared to drive safely for the entirety of the season and you’ll be able to breath easier every time you get behind the wheel of your vehicle.
