Protect Yourself Against A Connecticut Bike Accident With These Three Tools

You may not know this, but along with being the foremost experts on auto safety, AAA also has other areas of expertise, including bike safety.  For many years the organization has run safety programs for kids on bike safety and they continue to publish information for the safety of all bike riders.

This month is no different as the folks at AAA have recommended a few tools that you can use to avoid a Connecticut bike accident or at the very least reduce the severity of this type of accident.  The tools recommended by AAA are consequential whether you’re out for a once a summer bike ride or you’re training for your second century ride of the season.

Taking these tools along with you will help to ensure that you stay safe while you’re out for a bike ride:

  1. Bike helmet: It may be surprising to hear that a large percentage of Connecticut cyclists do not wear a helmet when riding.  It is not required for anyone over the age of 16 and given the choice many adults do not wear the protective gear.  It is, however, the most important tool you have against getting seriously injured while riding your bike.   It may not look “cool” but you sure will feel cool when you survive a crash on your bike and do not have a serious head injury.

  2. First Aid Kit:  The kit that AAA recommends can be found here.   It is important to have gear available to you if you do get into an accident so you can clean and  bandage a wound.  While you may not be able to pack a full first aid kit on your bike, you will be able to pack enough to treat your injury until you can get somewhere with better facilities.

  3. Lights for your bike:  Even if you are not riding at night you will still want a light for your bike.  Illuminating your bike and yourself is one of the best things you can do to make sure that on-coming traffic can see you coming.  You may also want to put a light on the back of your bike so that traffic that you cannot see will be able to see you as well.

While AAA does not explicitly suggest a mirror for bike safety, we will add that to the mix so you have better vision when riding.  A mirror for your handlebars can come in handy to help you avoid a Connecticut bike accident.

Whether you’re an avid cyclist or just a casual rider, this gear recommended by AAA will help keep you safe while out riding your bike.  If you do get injured you may need an attorney to help review your case.  Contact our office and one of our experienced attorneys will speak with you.
