Working Hard for the Hardworking People of Connecticut

There Is A Pedestrian Fatality Every 85 Minutes In The United States

This staggering statistic comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and should give us all pause as we think about how to stay safe in our day to day lives.

Whether you are on the road as a driver or walking throughout a neighborhood, you could be involved in a Connecticut pedestrian accident and then become one of the statistics that is reported by the NHTSA.   We don’t want that for you, so here are some helpful tips to keep in mind when you are out walking that you can use to avoid getting injured or an even worse tragedy.

  1. Always use a crosswalk where it is available.  Drivers are trained to slow down where crosswalks are painted on the streets and this gives you the best visibility as a pedestrian crossing the street.

  2. Wear bright clothing.  If you’re out walking you should not blend in with your surroundings you want to stand out so drivers can see you.

  3. Make eye contact with the driver so they see you and you are sure they are paying attention.  If you both see each other, the likelihood of an accident will be greatly diminished.

  4. Look both ways at intersections, but also when crossing parking lots and driveways.  Cars tend to come out of parking lots and driveways fast and may not see you.  You need to see them.

Being safe when walking throughout a town or city requires vigilance.  In order to avoid an accident you will need to be aware of your surroundings and ensure that you are visible to those driving near you.  It is not in your best interest to blend in, otherwise you may not be seen and end up as the victim of a Connecticut pedestrian accident.

The worst thing you can think is that it could never happen to you, that is the furthest thing from the truth.  No one is immune from the dangers of being a pedestrian and we all need to remain clear eyed to that reality.  If an injury were to occur we could certainly help review your case.  Contact our office and one of our experienced attorneys will work to ensure your long-term interests are protected.
