Working Hard for the Hardworking People of Connecticut

Three Bad Habits That Could Put You At Risk Of A Workplace Injury

Workplace injuries happen and often lead to Connecticut workers’ compensation claims.  In many cases these injuries are unavoidable and happen as the result of an accident.  This is something you really can’t do much about and will need to address it as it happens.  However, there are some things you can stop doing that will help you avoid getting injured.

As you are working in a job and have been working there for some time it is human nature to develop bad habits that often go unnoticed because they seem harmless.  Depending on what the bad habits that you have developed are, you may be putting yourself in a position that could cause you harm and leave you vulnerable to getting injured.

Breaking bad habits is not a small task.  Anyone who has tried to give up a bad habit in their personal life knows that habitual behaviors are anything but easy to move away from, but in the workplace if these habits are putting you at risk it could mean the difference between being injured at work and out of work for some time or doing your job safely.  If you know these bad habits, it can be easier to break them, so here are a few of the most common ones that show up in the workplace.

  1. Being distracted by co-workers.  Camaraderie is an essential part to enjoying your job, but it can also become a habit that needs to be broken.  For instance, if you do a job that requires you to perform the same task over and over again you may find yourself chatting with your co-worker while you are performing the task.  This might be fine nine times out of ten, but on the tenth time it might put you in a position that you make a mistake which could lead to an injury.  If you’re talking with your co-worker on a regular basis while performing your job, you may want to stop doing the work while you’re communicating and then turn your focus back to the job at hand when the conversation is over.

  2. Skipping steps.  It can be tempting when you’ve done a job for a long time to skip steps in a process, especially if you’ve deemed them unnecessary to finish the job on time and successfully, but there are some steps that could leave you vulnerable to an injury and then you could find yourself out of work for quite some time.  Skipping steps, especially those that are meant to keep you safe while on the job could lead you to a whole host of problems including getting injured.

  3. Rushing through your work.  We all want to hit our deadlines at work, but rushing through to get to those deadlines could leave you in a situation where you might get injured and not be able to perform the duties of your job at all.  If you find yourself in a situation where you are constantly rushing, you may need to look at how you’re managing your time and also whether the workload you have is too high for your capacity.  It can be intimidating to bring this up to a supervisor, but if it is positioned in a way that will let them know you are looking out for the best interest of the company.

Your bad habits at work may be putting you in a situation where you are going to get injured and find it necessary to file a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim.  While it doesn’t matter why you were injured if it happened at work, you should still do your best to avoid any bad habits that would result in an injury if you can.  These habits will not allow you to perform your job at your maximum capacity.
