The Three Things You Should Have In Your Car This Winter

Protecting yourself from the dangers of inclement weather over the winter months is paramount to avoiding a Connecticut auto accident.  There are steps you can take as a driver that will keep you safe, but there are also things you can do to make sure you are prepared no matter what Mother Nature throws your way.

Taking the time to make sure that you are prepared, and your car is supplied with the necessary equipment in case of an emergency situation is one of the best things you can do right now to insure you get through the winter months without serious injury or harm to you and your passengers.

The below list is not exhaustive by any means, but these three things are a good place to start, especially if you currently do not have anything in your vehicle to keep you safe this winter.

  1. Ice scraper.  Whether you’re just starting out on the road or driving in an unexpected storm, ice can build up on your windshield and the rest of the windows throughout the car.  It is critical that you are prepared with the right tool to address an issue like this, before you get into a situation where it is too late and you can’t see out of your windows.

  2. Rock salt.  Keeping a bag of rock salt in your car during the winter months will protect you from the dangers of spin outs that can put you in a dangerous position at intersections or on the side of streets where you may be struck by other cars that are battling the inclement weather.

  3. Windshield washer fluid.  It is important that BEFORE the winter weather arrives you top off your windshield washer fluid.  This is your best defense against not being able to see out of your front window.  As the winter months drag on you may need to refill this fluid and having spare fluid on hand is a good way to make sure you are always prepared for any eventuality.

Visibility and traction are two of the most important things you need during the winter months.  If you can’t see out of your vehicle you are putting yourself in a precarious spot and if your car cannot gain traction to keep moving forward you may be on the side of the road, or worse in the middle of the road, and be in danger.

A Connecticut auto accident can happen any time of year and even if you are fully prepared with these items this winter, but putting yourself in a position to be better prepared is one way to reduce your risk.  The more you can reduce your risk of an accident this winter the more you’ll be able to enjoy the winter weather without it causing trouble for you as the cold and snowy days drag on.
