Workplace Fatalities In Connecticut Mirror National Trends

In the most recent information available, the Connecticut Department of Labor indicates that the industries that cause the largest number of workplace fatalities in the state of Connecticut are similar to those industries nationwide.  When someone dies on the job not only may it present as a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim, but also as a Connecticut wrongful death claim as well.  

According to the state’s Department of Labor the deadliest job in Connecticut for the year 2018 was construction with 13 fatalities.  That represents almost a quarter of the 48 deaths that occurred in the state in 2018.  Other industries that saw fatalities included administrative and waste services (12), transportation and warehousing (6) and agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting (4.)

The national trends, reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics mirrors these numbers and indicates that the state of Connecticut is in line with other states for the number of fatalities in various industries.  

Workers should be aware of what industries present the most common problems in the workplace, especially as individuals are trying to determine in what industry they will end up working.  Choosing an industry with a high level of fatalities can be putting yourself at risk over the course of your career and may be a bad long-term decision for you and your family.

Whatever industry you choose should be safe, and your employer should be one that focuses on keeping its employees safe with proper equipment and proper training to get the job done.  Companies that cut corners and do not follow all of the recommended safety training and guidance may be putting you and your life in jeopardy
