While the state of Connecticut has opened back up and is on it’s way to returning to “normal” there are still some employers who may require the use of facial coverings for their employees. These types of jobs that require face masks to be worn may run into some major issues as the warmer weather approaches. Issues like trouble breathing, heat exhaustion, and mental health issues may arise and could potentially lead to issues that rise to the level of a Connecticut workers’ compensation claim.
The good news is that you do not need to suffer in silence. In fact, there are things you can do to encourage your employer to help you and your co-workers stay safe while also maintaining the proper protocols for guests and non-employees.
Here are a few things you can ask your employer to do if your working conditions are hot and leave it difficult for you to breath while at work;
-
Increase mask breaks. Removing your mask when it is safe should be encouraged to help minimize the harms caused by wearing a mask for a long time.
-
Space break rooms out to allow for six feet of social distancing which will enable employees to sit without a mask inside.
-
Allow employees to return to their cars during their break to utilize air conditioning and remove their mask
-
Provide hydration in the form of water whenever possible
-
In some circumstances you may be able to maintain a safe 6 foot distance from co-workers while performing the duties of the job, in this case, your employer may consider allowing you to remove your mask while working
Masks have become an all too familiar part of daily life, but as we enter the second summer for workers who have jobs that may make them overheat we need to keep in mind that this environment may lead to workplace injuries that are preventable.
