Connecticut state officials are encouraging motorists to continue to obey the state’s “Move Over” law which requires drivers to switch lanes to stay as far removed from a vehicle that is broken down or pulled over on the side of the road.
Recently the issue has come up as another tow truck driver was struck and killed while tending to a broken down car in Trumbull. The incident happened as another driver failed to slow their vehicle and careened out of control and crashed into the tow truck driver, killing him instantly.
Passed in 2009, the “Move Over” law was intended to protect those first responders who typically put themselves into harm's way to aid a broken down vehicle on the side of the road. While the law is most often cited to protect state police, it is also intended to protect folks like tow truck drivers who place their lives in danger helping motorists. Failure to move over when approaching a vehicle on the side of the road can result in a fine of up to $10,000 for the driver.
In order to obey the law, drivers are required to slow down below the speed limit and if possible, move over to the adjacent lane. The intent of the law is to give emergency responders the space they need to safely operate and come to the aid of motorists on the side of the road.
Connecticut auto accidents regularly occur due to a driver's failure to follow this law. If you or a loved one were injured in an auto accident, contact our office immediately for a review of your case.
